Mobile Phone Airbag

Let’s face it, we’ve all dropped our smartphones before, and if you just so happen to pick it up and find a spider-web of cracked glass, it’s pretty frustrating. Yes, there are bulky protective cases that protect your phone just fine, but that often leads to your phone feeling like a brick in your pocket. Luckily, Philip Frenzel, who is currently completing his Mechatronics Master’s Degree at Aalen University, created a gadget that acts as an airbag for your phone.

Although it’s called a phone “airbag,” the device is more reminiscent of Spider-Man’s Iron Spider suit. Within a slim protective case, Frenzel built sensors that detect free-fall, which triggers metal springs that pop out and cushion your phone on impact. Also, unlike actual airbags, you can push the metal springs back in and your smartphone is all set for future accidents. Frenzel won Germany’s Mechatronic Prize for 2018 and plans to launch a Kickstarter for the project in July, despite Amazon securing a patent for a similar design in 2012. We are definitely looking forward to this product’s launch.
