It was 1966. Ferrari had dominated the illustrious Le Mans Grand Prix and European Racing at large through its entire history, up until this point. In 1966, America finally broke through, as three Fords occupied the podium, going 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, to mark a clean sweep for the United States. Now, the Ford GT that won Bronze for the stars and stripes is going up for auction, and it’s expected to fetch a pretty penny.

With the 2018 Le Mans Grand Prix 24-Hour Endurance Race to be run next week, Sotheby’s is offering up a pristinely preserved relic of one of the most famous – or infamous, if you ask a European – Le Mans races in its history. Drivers Ronnie Bucknum and Dick Hutcherson shared the glory back in ’66, piloting this MK II GT40 to a third place finish, effectively blocking Ferrari from a top-3 finish after six consecutive victories by the Italian company. One of the most legendary supercars has been restored to its Le Mans specification and livery, and is expected to fetch between nine and $12 million.

Purchase: $9,000,000 +
