Every so often, human development gets to a point where things stop progressing down a predetermined normalized path. In this case, we’re suggesting that luxury vehicles have hit their peak. So, since seats can’t really get more comfortable and accoutrements seem to stagnate, what’s the next step? Volvo seems to think it rests in immersive technology – which they have pared into their S90 Ambience Concept.

Debuted at the Beijing Auto Show, this luxury car is all about its cabin features. On top of its comfy seating, this vehicle is also loaded with a Bowers and Wilkins premium sound system that is designed to pipe in music, radio, or sounds from one of several themes. Those smartphone-controlled preset themes – which include Northern Lights, Scandinavian Forest, Swan Lake, Archipelago, Rain, Nocturnal, and Freedom – are aided by visual projections on the ceiling of the car and, believe it or not, custom scents that are expelled by the center console. The idea is to turn the car into a complete sensory experience beyond what we’ve already come to know. No word on when this will be put into their vehicles, but Volvo is serious about putting the tech on the road.
