Peering back through the annals of sports history, it is sometimes hard to imagine the feats of sport that were achieved with the equipment of the day. Motorcycle racing exemplifies this well, and this 1982 BMW R80G/S resto mod by Johnston Moto tells the story of rallies gone past meeting with present day technologies.

Originating as a stock R80G/S sourced locally in builder Mark Johnston’s home country of South Africa, mark got straight to work by rebuilding the motor, adding a 1000cc big bore kit, and capped it off with a one off Akrapovič exhaust. Mark then slapped on a beefed up set of WP forks from a modern era KTM, held tight by a custom triple clamp, which tracks a new Excel front wheel perfectly. The swingarm had to be lengthened and widened to accept a modern 140 width rear tire, which set it up perfectly to accept a fresh monoshock prepped by MP Custom Valve. Encased by modern motocross style fenders and finished with a custom subframe designed with an integrated luggage rack, this BMW is the exact point where past meets present.
