Looks like Volkswagen got the memo for continued success in the American market: build it bigger and build it here. The all new 2018 Atlas is the German car manufacturer’s answer to the American love affair with the SUV. It’s their largest model ever built, available with two power-plant options and five trim levels.

The Atlas was unveiled yesterday at the Santa Monica pier, ironically the terminus of the historic Route 66, serving to prop up the American value of this SUV. It’s available in either a 2.0-liter turbocharged TSI four-cylinder with 238hp or a 3.6-liter VR6 pushing out 280 hp for a bit more pepper under the pedal. These options are offed in congruence with an eight-speed transmission and either front wheel drive or 4Motion all-wheel-drive in case your family is more outdoor-friendly on the weekends. Inside, there’s seating for up to seven adults and their luggage along with a suite of vehicle connection services such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink. It also hosts a 480-watt Fender Premium Audio System, several driver assistance features including lane assist and blind spot monitoring, and is slated for release in American showrooms in Spring 2017. No word on pricing just yet.
