A mountaineer’s last line of defense is the one that matters most. South Korean-based outdoor brand Black Yak understands this all too well, which is why they developed the Black Yak Emergency Jacket.

Weighing in at just 71 grams, this layer is among the lightest wind and waterproof jackets ever made. Its featherweight quality is due in large part to the use of a special Dyneema fabric. Despite its seemingly flimsy look and light feel, the material is 10-times stronger than steel – making it ideal for taking with you into the backcountry. For a close fit, the jacket features an elastic lining along the cuff, hem, hood, and waist. And to ensure comfort? The layer has a YKK zipper with chin guard and a gripper band along the elastication. Don’t worry if you already have a stuffed pack. This jacket scrunches down to the size of a softball for easy portage.

Purchase: $475
