One of the most pivotal scenes in the entire Star Wars franchise takes place at the beginning of Return of the Jedi. In it, Luke Skywalker travels to Jabba the Hutt’s palace to free Han and Leia from the vile gangster’s imprisonment. It’s also revealed that, in the time since The Empire Strikes Back, Luke has built himself a new lightsaber. And now that actual on-screen lightsaber prop is headed to auction.
Built from a combination of cast metal, brass, and rubber, this prop was the one seen in many closeups with R2D2 prior to being launched across the Sarlacc pit and into the hands of Luke Skywalker. And it has documentation to prove it – including a series of polaroid photos taken by Lucasfilm and a certificate of authenticity. In fact, you can even match up the chipped edges of this prop with the scenes from the movie, further proving the veracity of its claimed use in the film. That makes this an incredibly rare and important part of cinematic history – one that promises to fetch an intergalactic bounty hunter-level sum, with the sale range estimated between $150,000-$250,000.
