Offering a glimpse into what the distant future may hold for all-electric supercars, Lamborghini and MIT teamed up to collaborate on a new design concept that completely reimagines the mechanics behind luxury automobiles. Dubbed the “Lamborghini of the Terzo Millennio”, which is Italian for “third millennium,” this is one visceral automobile that introduces us to the theories of tomorrow.

Purposed to revolutionize the current state of battery storage for electric vehicles, the Millennio instead features supercapacitors in lieu of conventional batteries. Utilizing this technology, peak power, and regenerated kinetic energy are then delivered with limited aging and cycling over the course of the vehicle’s lifespan. Each wheel is then equipped with an integrated electric engine – making this a four-wheel-drive supercar – that then harnesses the perks of electric-powered vehicles in conjunction with the power generated by its own supercapacitors. Additionally, the entire carbon fiber structure utilizes a “self-healing” concept that not only detects cracks and damages to the substructure but actively self-repairs them thanks to micro-channels in the body filled with healing chemistries. It’s no secret the Terzo Millennio is still deep in its conceptual phase. At the very least, however, concepts like this offer a glimpse of what’s to come for both the automobile and the driver behind the wheel.
