In order to realistically compete at the same performance level as Audi, Peugeot, and Renault in the world of rally cars, Ford decided to build an option complete with a lightweight all-wheel-drive platform that could produce an output similar to Formula One vehicles. This, naturally, was no easy task. However, with the help of Formula One designer Tony Southgate, they managed to accomplish this goal through the development of the RS200.

Here’s the Evolution variant of that very car – slated to race in 1987 but never made it due to the event’s cancellation. That doesn’t mean this vehicle is any less storied though. Here, we have the upgraded version of the original RS200, with a 2137cc BDT-E engine offering up to 815 hp and a 0-60 time of just 3.07 seconds (a Guinness World Record from 1986-1996). Only 24 examples were ever built over the course of its production year, making this particular rally car a rare find indeed, and it’s slated to hit auction next month for quite the pretty penny.

Purchase: $240,000+
