Marble House By Open Box Architects

Architects are like magicians; some make houses disappear into hillsides, some trick you into thinking small spaces are actually gigantic, and others will have you believing (if only for a moment) that their homes are floating in midair. The Marble Home by the team at Open Box studios in Bangkok, Thailand, belongs in the latter category.

By using marble cladding on the second story of the house, the architecture firm gives the viewer the sense that the building is defying the laws of physics. Light and cloudy, it hovers above the ground like an expensive middle finger to Isaac Newton. But as a kind of counterpoint to the wispy and bright nature of the stone, the second story of the house features dramatic and sharp angles throughout. The result is that the house comes off as more sculptural than it is architectural. Step inside the home, however, and you’ll find that nearly all of the rooms in the house boast warm wood cladding and plenty of natural light. And that brings us to the most impressive part of the home. Despite the drama of it – there is a real sense of balance. Cloudy is complemented by sharp, cold stone by warm wood. A real accomplishment by Open Box.
