The summer sun can kill. More than just bringing on heat stroke or dehydration, the violent UVA and UVB rays coming off of that distant burning ball of gas can cause skin damage and even cancer. That is why anglers and serious endurance athletes are getting excited about Columbia’s new Omni-Shade Sun Deflector technology.

Due out in Spring of 2018, this new technology from the storied outdoor apparel brand promises to reflect up to 25% more visible light than standard cotton or synthetic fabrics. Much in the same way that Columbia has used metallic dots on the inside of their jackets to keep heat in, these shirts use tiny titanium-dioxide coated dots on the exterior of the shirt to bounce back harmful UV rays. Along with helping you dodge the dermatologist’s office, this apparel developed by Columbia’s Performance Innovation Team will keep you cool in the field. The upcoming line (which will have everything from long sleeve shirts to neck gaiters) will feature both Omni-Wick and Omni-Freeze Zero technologies. The former pulls sweat from your skin and helps you feel cooler, while Omni-Freeze Zero actually detects when you are sweating and cools down the shirt material along with your skin. Keep an eye out for the release of these early next year.
