If you are the average car-buyer, you may never really think that much about your headlights. They go on and off when you want them to. End of story. Audi, however, isn’t average. Over the years, they’ve put a huge amount of R&D into their headlights and it is paying off with their Exclusive 2017 Audi R8.
With a 5.4 V10 under the hood that pumps out 610 horses through a paddle shifting 7 speed dual clutch transmission, this car already had a whole lot to recommend it. Audi still felt the need to make it that much cooler by putting laser headlights on. Yeah, you read that right. Lasers. These were first introduced in Europe back in 2013, but they’re finally making their way stateside. Apparently the way this works is that each headlight includes a laser module that shoots blue light out of four high intensity diodes. These blue 450 nanometer lasers are then transmitted to visible light by a phosphor converter. In plain English? These headlights do much more than provide bragging rights to owners, (nice car, Tim, but does it have lasers?) they actually greatly improve the visibility. Only 25 of these will be made available, but here is to hoping that they’ll be more widely available. Prices are set at $230,000. [Purchase]
