What does heavy metal from the 80s have to do with 50s-era jazz? Very little, we’d say, aside from maybe both styles being despised by cranky parents at the time. But Brazilian artist Rafael Melandi begs to differ, and he’s proven his point by morphing some famous metal album covers into Blue Note-era jazz motifs.

The project is called Metazz, and it features the likes of Metallica’s Master of Puppets, Black Sabbath’s Paranoid, Iron Maiden’s Powerslave, and Pantera’s Vulgar Display of Power redefined with funky Blue Note-era artwork. You wouldn’t think it’d work, but it does. Melandi says the two genres have similar levels of force and intensity, so it wasn’t too hard for him to make the changes. Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer, Judas Priest, and Motorhead all join in the fun too. Perhaps mom would approve now?
