Snurfer Boards

Before there were snowboards, there were Snurfers. OK, perhaps some background is needed on what exactly a Snurfer is. The Snurfer was pretty much the original snowboard. Created by Sherman Poppen in 1965, it was ridden like a snowboard, but without any bindings, so steering and stability was a dicey affair, boosted by a thin rope tied to the nose.

What’s old is now new again as Snurfer Boards are back. Produced by Balance Designs, the two available models (Classic, $120, in Rocket Red and Sunburst Yellow, and Nomad, $140) are updated versions of the original monoski. The new Snurfer is a little wider and perhaps a little grippier—perfect for some slipping and sliding fun on your local hilltop. One bummer: all models are sold out through the end of December.
