You might think that wearable technology, like the futuristic Ritot projection watch or the Samsung Gear 2, are only recent inventions. But, that’s simply not true. The first smartwatch was actually introduced in 1977 by Hewlett Packard, named the HP-01, and was billed as a smart electronic wristwatch at the time.

Of course, the HP-01 was only considered “smart” at the time of its reveal. It included a digital wristwatch, a personal calculator, an alarm clock, a stopwatch, a timer and a 200-year calendar. The watch had 28 tiny keys on its face, four of which were raised for easier access, with the rest of the keys only being pressed with the included retractable stylus/pen. As far as style goes, the sleek HP smartwatch would’ve been quite the accessory back in 1977, but it is comparatively large to the devices available on the market today. [Purchase]
