It warms the heart a bit to know that while way too many people were taking duck-faced pictures of themselves last year, there were at least a few people seeking to reach higher with the art of photography. We present to you, National Geographic Traveler’s Photo Contest winners.

The top photos are truly special, as they span the globe and capture nature and humanity in some visually spectacular moments. There’s the dramatic face painting of a girl in India; the diver in Tragoss, Austria, swimming past a tree in the Green Lake; the charmingly quaint Czech Republic town immersed in fog; and the jaw-dropping first place winner, this near-tornado in Julesburg, Colorado. Yeah, somehow this science-fictionesque storm never produced a tornado, just some brief funnels, large hail, and rain. And that’s why we still have the state of Colorado.
