The Volkswagen Beetle has never been the type of car to turn heads—unless it was an “Aww, how cute” kinda turn, like how a kitten also catches your attention. But the VW Beetle Dune is looking to change that. The new concept ride is being unveiled this week at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and it features a dramatic low-slung body with a smorgasbord of aggressive styling touches. And yes, that is a pair of skis you see bolted to the roof.

The interior takes another bold step forward, highlighted by the bright yellow accents. The powertrain is based on the R-Line Beetle running gear, meaning it has a 210-horsepower turbocharged TSI engine and six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. VW says it’s only a concept for now, but rumor has it this buggy could be bouncing on real world roads as early as next year.
