While it doesn’t hold the same level of prestige as it did in the 1990s, the Battle of the Twins race at Daytona was once a go-to proving ground for motorcycle manufacturers. And it’s the machines that competed at this once-iconic 50-mile event that inspired custom motorcycle builder, Scott Kolb to churn out his latest project: a feather-light, carbon-clad BMW race bike.
The Bavarian airhead was ported and fitted with dual spark-plugged cylinder heads, bigger valves, an up-specced flywheel, a race-grade clutch, a balanced crankshaft, and a Siebenrock big-bore kit that bumps displacement up to an even 1,000cc’s. The build also sports a fully-bespoke two-piece trellis frame made from 4130 Chromoly tubing that utilizes the power-plant as a stressed-member and sees a matching, custom trellis-style single-sided swing-arm bolt directly to the engine. The one-off framework is adorned in custom-made carbon fiber bodywork and a knee-dented aluminum tank. The Beemer also boasts Ohlins suspension, Brembo brakes, Rotobox RBX2 carbon fiber wheels, and a smattering of Rizoma and Motogadget bits. All the modifications, carbon, and customs work allow the completed bike to generate 82hp while tipping the scales at 310lbs — a far cry from the ’76 R90/6 donor’s 60hp and 462lbs weight.
