For most of us, an empty Bic pen is little more than trash that hasn’t been thrown out yet. But for Spanish product designer Juan Carlos Fanes? He sees a tool that hasn’t been used to its fullest potential.
In anticipation of International Design Week of Milan, Fanes painted a simple set of Bic pens with metallic paint and fitted them with a set of plastic attachments he built himself. Those basic add-ons transform the dollar-store pens into a precision knife, folder, ruler, compass, and calligraphy tool. As of right now, this project is little more than a concept being shown around Spain, but with any luck Fanes will either sell the plastic attachments online or at the very least make the plans available for making with a 3D printer.
