Mr. Pip Double Cross Dice Game

For a little bit there, it felt like smartphone apps were going to replace board-games. Everyone was seemingly more interested in Candy Crush than buying property on Atlantic Ave. But if there is any evidence that low-tech games are far from gone, it is Mr. Pip’s Double Cross Dice Game.

First and foremost, this thing looks nothing like your common dice game. If anything, Mr. Pip’s looks like a piece of decor you’d find at CB2. But rather than being nothing more than innate and cool-looking, all six ends of the die holder contain five dice and a cup. To play the game, the entire table shakes up their respective cup and then sets it down. After ‘rolling’ the dice, each player takes a peak at their ‘hand’ and one person starts bidding. For instance, they can say ‘four twos’. Then, each player has an opportunity to bid the original bid up by either the number of the die, or the number of dice. Everyone keeps bidding up until it gets ridiculous enough for someone to call a bluff. Anyone between the bidder and the challenger who ends up being wrong loses a die – ending the round. Rounds are played until everyone loses their dice except for one. When it comes to having a good time, simple games still beat out smartphones.
