The 20 Best Portable Bluetooth Speakers

2014 Picks

No one wants to hear their music through those scratchy sounding smartphone speakers. It’s time to invest some money into a nice set of speakers for your mobile device, and seeing that connectors are continuously changing, wired speakers are quickly becoming a thing of the past. While both AirPlay and Sonos offer some outstanding speakers, we are going to focus on Bluetooth wireless speakers, specifically portable ones. While there are a ton of uses for speakers, we decided to focus on the ones that you could easily bring with you, everywhere you go.

With demand for wireless speakers continuing to increase exponentially, the options are starting to become a bit overwhelming to say the least. We’ve scoured the web, read countless reviews, tested some of our favorites on our own mobile devices, and put together a list of the 18 best portable Bluetooth wireless speakers. We tried to incorporate a range of speakers from $30 offerings all the way up to $200 speakers, but for the most part, we tried to keep the list affordable. We know just how quickly the budget can get out of hand when dealing with any consumer electronics. So whether you’re looking for something to slip into your pocket, or something to rock out with at the beach, we’ve got you covered with this comprehensive list of the best Bluetooth speakers on the market. In no particular order, check out our favorite portable speakers below.

Logitech UE Mobile Boombox

1. Logitech UE Mobile Boombox

We’re not going to waste any time getting to our favorite pick on the list. After listening to the sound quality produced by this little gadget, you would never guess that it’s priced under a $100. Blowing the doors off pretty much everything else in its price range, this Logitech wireless speaker offers up crystal clear speakerphone capabilities, deep bass, weighs in at just 0.7 pounds, and sounds better than just about any tiny speaker on the market. With a 50 foot wireless distance, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that provides 10-hours of bass-bumping fun, this is a must have for anyone that wants impressive sound quality without breaking the bank. [Purchase]

Carbon Audio Pocket Speaker

2. Carbon Audio Pocket Speaker

This is easily one of the best tiny speakers we’ve ever used. When you first get your hands on one, you might ask yourself, “How in the hell is this tiny little speaker going to fill my room with sound?” Trust us. It does – and it does a damn good job too. Sure it’s less than an inch thick, and weighs a mere 5.75 ounces, but thanks to the audio drivers positioned on both sides of the speaker, the Carbon Audio is able to deliver a 360 degree sound field that will have you happy to shell out the 99 bucks this thing costs. It can play music for up to 8 hours on a single charge, and users can even pair two Pocket Speakers simultaneously if one is just not enough. [Purchase]

Bose SoundLink Mini Bluetooth Speaker

3. Bose SoundLink Mini Bluetooth Speaker

While you can’t go wrong with any of the speakers from the Bose Soundlink range, we’re focusing on the Mini due to the fact that this guide is all about portability. The Mini weighs a mere 1.5 pounds, and comes with a rechargeable battery that provides 7 hours of music playback. At about $200, we were hoping that the Mini came with a built-in microphone for handling speakerphone calls, but we regret to inform you that it doesn’t. When it comes to sound quality though, Bose always delivers, and the Mini is no exception. [Purchase]

OontZ Angle Ultra Portable Bluetooth Wireless Speaker

4. OontZ Angle Ultra Portable Bluetooth Wireless Speaker

There’s a reason this is the number one selling Bluetooth speaker on Amazon. The team at Cambridge SoundWorks created this speaker, and are regarded as some of the best when it comes to home theater and Wi-Fi music systems. Needless to say, these guys know what they’re doing, and the Oontz is another notch on the belt of success for their product innovation team. The Ultra-Portable speaker (as the brand calls it) weighs just 9.5 ounces, has a 12-hour battery life, and comes with speaker phone capabilities. Did we mention it’s only $40? Yeah, this one is hard to beat in the “under $50”price range” category. It also comes in a multitude of color options. [Purchase]

JBL Charge

5. JBL Charge

Weighing in at 2.3 pounds, the Charge is a bit larger than some of the previously viewed speakers, but it’s definitely still portable. The speaker features rubber feet along the bottom end to set up horizontally, but can also be positioned vertically if you so choose thanks to the rubber gasket. The three blue LED lights let you know when the 12-hour battery life is running low, and the built-in USB port keeps your mobile gadgets fully charged on the go. It does lack a bit when it comes bass, and can become a bit distorted when you start to crank the volume, but the dual 5-watt full-range drivers get the job done well, providing nice sound quality. [Purchase]

Soundfreaq Sound Kick

6. Soundfreaq Sound Kick

While it’s hard to justify spending the same $100 it costs to pick up the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox, the Soundfreaq is still a solid speaker worth taking a look at. Especially considering the Logitech offering can be a bit difficult to get your hands on during the holiday season. Equipped with full 2.1 stereo sound, the Sound Kick comes with a 3.5mm wired aux input and a rechargeable battery that’s good for up to 7 hours of playtime. [Purchase]

Braven 600 Speaker

7. Braven 600 Speaker

Braven is another brand that offers up a solid line of Bluetooth speakers ranging from the $100 price point all the way up to $300. The Braven 600 provides crystal clear sound quality, 12-hour battery life, noise-cancelling speakerphone, and a sleek design that’s hard not to love. Typically this speaker retails for $150, but during the holidays we have seen it going for around 100 bucks, which is definitely a steal. It provides similar sound quality to the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox, but with the added 2-hour battery time. So if you can get it at the same price ($100), we say go for it. [Purchase]

HMDX Jam Plus Portable Speaker

8. HMDX Jam Plus Portable Speaker

We know not everyone can afford hundreds of dollars for Bluetooth speakers, but does that mean you should be left in the cold when it comes to sound quality? Absolutely not. That’s where the HMDX Jam Plus comes into play. The follow up to the brand’s HMDX Jam Class (retails for $30), the successor made some nice improvements to the original, yet only increased the price tag by $10. The Jam Plus can handle 4 hours of wireless play up to 30 feet, includes a line-in for non-Bluetooth devices, and even lets you run a second Jam Plus for that surround sound feel. Unfortunately it doesn’t offer up speakerphone capabilities, but with a fun and playful design along with solid sound quality, this is a steal for the price. [Purchase]

Philips ShoqBox SB7200

9. Philips ShoqBox SB7200

If you’re looking for a more rugged design that doesn’t compromise sound quality too much, this is a good choice. While the ShoqBox does have some intermittent Bluetooth connectivity issues along with a Smart Sensor that we could live without, the outdoorsman inspired build of this speaker won us over. It’s completely shock and splash-proof, comes with a built-in microphone, wOOX speaker technology for outstanding bass reproduction, a 8-hour rechargeable battery, and a built-in microphone for speakerphone conversations. It even comes with a built-in carabiner clip, making it easy to attach to your backpack during your next hiking or camping adventure. The perfect speaker to bring along during your next outdoor excursion. [Purchase]

Eton Rugged Rukus Solar-Powered Sound System

10. Eton Rugged Rukus Solar-Powered Sound System

The design alone was enough to sell us on the Eton Rukus. Taking inspiration from the old school ghetto blasters, this Bluetooth speaker is one of a kind, seeing that it’s powered by the sun. The speaker offers up 8 hours of playtime, and when you drain the battery, just sit the sound system in direct sunlight for 5 hours to recharge it. Of course you also have the option to plug it in using the included AC power cord, a method that takes just 2.5 hours to refuel. The Eton Rukus also comes with USB to charge your smartphone, is drop-proof from over a meter, and although it’s not completely waterproof, it is water resistant. [Purchase]

Beats by Dr Dre Pill Speaker

11. Beats by Dr. Dre Pill Speaker

While we do believe there are much better speakers out there in the price range, we also believe that the Pill is a solid Bluetooth speaker that produces good sound quality – and it’s very portable. If it were priced about $100 cheaper, this would be one of our favorites, but that’s what you get with a celebrity endorsed/owned company…massive brand power. Anyone who’s owned a pair of Beats by Dr. Dre headphones knows that those are known for their bumping bass, but oddly enough, the Pill doesn’t deliver very much bass at all. It does pump out some solid volume and sound though, especially for a 2.5 inch speaker. The Pill is equipped with 4 built-in speakers, a wireless distance of up to 30 feet, and 8 hours of battery life. Again, not a bad speaker, but it is overpriced for what you get. [Purchase]

JLab Audio Crasher Speaker

12. JLab Audio Crasher Speaker

If you’re looking for a great “bang for your buck” wireless Bluetooth speaker, there are few better than this. While it was retailing for nearly $100 at one point, the JLab Crasher comes down to under $60 for the holiday season, making it a no-brainer for those that don’t want to spend a ton of money on a portable sound system. The Crasher has been outfitted with 2 full-range drivers for clean mids and highs along with a rear passive subwoofer to handle bass duties. It also features a speakerphone mic, and a 30-foot wireless range, but the real selling point for the Crasher is the 18-hour battery life, which is nearly twice the life of some of the best speakers on the list. [Purchase]

Jawbone Mini Jambox Speaker

13. Jawbone Mini Jambox Speaker

The portable Bluetooth speaker that started it all – the Jambox. Sure it had its flaws when it landed on the retail scene back in 2010, but since then the brand has done a great job expanding on the original version, creating an entire range of Jambox portable speakers – all of which are beautifully designed. When it comes portability (which is what our list revolves around), we’d have to go with the smallest (and newest) member of the Jambox family – the Mini Jambox. Just released in September, this speaker is small enough to fit into your pocket, provides 10-hours of crystal clear playback, and is probably the best looking speaker on the list. The 9.1 ounce speaker also comes in a variety of colors. It is a bit pricey (retailing for $180), but if design is an important part of your buying decision, this series is a good place to invest your money. [Purchase]

Philips SoundShooter Speaker

14. Philips SoundShooter Speaker

After the success of its predecessor, the Shoqbox, Philips decided to once again release a rugged, wireless Bluetooth speaker that’s small enough to take anywhere. Packed with a built-in microphone, 30-feet wireless range, and 8 hours of playback on a single charge, this is another great choice for the “$50 and under price range” category. It’s available in 4 different colors, and also comes with a built-in carabiner. [Purchase]

G-Project G-Boom

15. G-Project G-Boom

Measuring in at over 10 inches tall, and nearly a foot wide, the G-Boom is a lot less portable than some of the other offerings on the list, but it is still portable. Sure you can’t just slip it into your pocket, but it’s perfect for skateboarding sessions, bringing to the beach, poolside drinking, and a whole lot more. This thing cranks out music at volumes that will literally blow you away. It’s a very loud and powerful speaker, while still providing clear and full midrange. It won “Speaker of the Year” from iLounge, and it was definitely well deserved. The speaker itself is super tough, and features a protective rubber base to help it take a beating. Of course being as powerful as it is, it’s expected to have a battery life that is weaker than some of its competitors. The G-Boom has a 6-hour battery life, but for those 6 hours, you will enjoy loud, clear music with plenty of bass. [Purchase]

Jabra Solemate Speaker

16. Jabra Solemate Speaker

This footwear inspired speaker is equipped with 2 acoustic tweeters and 1 powerful subwoofer, and while it might be a bit lesser known than some of its competitors, it can certainly hang with the best of them. The Solemate features a rechargeable 8-hour battery, and comes with a durable sound bag that’s perfect for protection against the elements while listening to your music. This speaker pumps out both clear, loud midrange and high-end, but does fall a little short when it comes to bass. Although it does feature a built-in microphone, the speakerphone quality is rather lackluster. Weighing just 1.3 pounds, this speaker also features a nifty fabric loop (inspired by the same loops found on your sneakers), making it easy to carry with you on the go. [Purchase]

Grace Digital Ecoxgear Ecoxbt

17. Grace Digital Ecoxgear Ecoxbt

If you’re looking for the perfect Bluetooth wireless speakers for wet environments, this is the speaker for you. We used this thing all through the summer season next to the pool and at the beach, and absolutely loved it. It features a 33 foot wireless range, 10 hours of playback time, and delivers great sound quality. Again, the selling point for the Ecoxgear Ecoxbt is the waterproof construction. Like many of the other speakers on the list, it also gives users the ability to take calls through the speakerphone, another great feature while you’re hosting a pool party. This speaker measures in at about 9 inches in length, and weighs 1.5 pounds. [Purchase]

JBL Flip

18. JBL Flip

The second offering from the folks at JBL, think of the Flip as the little brother to the Charge. The Flip comes with two 1-5/8 inch drivers along with a built-in bass port, and provides 5 hours of playback time. The battery is quite a bit weaker than many of the other choices, but the sound quality is great. As with the Charge, this speaker offers up the ability to lay both horizontally and vertically. While most of the other speakers offer the ability to charge via USB, the Flip utilizes a standard wall charger. It does include a built-in microphone for hands-free calls. [Purchase]
