Action Hero: The 25 Best GoPro Accessories

Whether you’re an action sports junkie, or just someone who loves to document all of life’s unexpected adventures, GoPro was made for you. In just 10 years the California-based GoPro has gone from nothing to a publicly traded company with a market cap rapidly approaching the $10 billion mark. The brainchild of Nick Woodman, GoPro is a household name, and with new iterations of the action camera hitting the scene on a regular basis (the latest being the GoPro HERO 4 for the holiday shopping season), the brand shows absolutely no signs of slowing down.

With all of that being said, we think it’s about time we put together a comprehensive GoPro buyer’s guide, covering all of the best accessories, gifts and mounts made for the original action camera. Like the iPhone add-on market before it, GoPro’s accessories sector has also become big business, with product developers creating something for nearly everyone. We’ve tried to cover every spectrum of action sports, from race car driving and firearms to surfing and skateboarding, with a whole lot more in between. So dive in head first as we explore the 25 best GoPro accessories and mounts the retail market has to offer.

Chest Mount Harness (Chesty)

Quite possibly the most popular mount, this harness sets your GoPro camera right on your chest, letting you capture your legs when skiing on the slopes or bike frame and handlebars when you’re hitting the motocross course. This fully adjustable harness fits people of all sizes, and will fit right over a jacket for cold weather filming. While we do like helmet mounts, this harness offers a more immersive way to capture film from kayaking to mounting biking, and everything in between. [Purchase: $39]

Floaty Backdoor

Floaty Backdoor

A lot of people plan on hitting the water with their GoPro, and while most remember that purchasing a waterproof case (or a waterproof GoPro model) is a must, many forget what will happen if the camera slips away from their grip in the ocean. This floaty backdoor uses adhesives to attach to your action cam along with camera tethers for additional security in more extreme conditions. If you do lose track of your camera during snorkeling, surfing or any other deep-water activity, it will pop right up to the surface thanks to its newfound buoyancy. [Purchase: $11]

So when we found out there was a simple way to mount our action camera onto our surfboards, we were all in. The set includes mounts, tethers, tether straps, FCS plug, and rubber locking plug. While it was designed for surfing, these GoPro mounts work wonders on staundup paddle boards, sea kayaks and boat decks. [Purchase: $12]

GoPro Blackout House

When you’re looking to catch the most organic and natural video (or some real Spec Ops type stuff), you’re best served by keeping the GoPro hidden, taking the focus off the camera itself. Draped in a stealthy black finish, that’s exactly what this thing was created for. But there’s also an added benefit. Dual HERO System

Dual HERO System

If you thought filming with one GoPro was cool, wait until you see what this thing is capable of when you’ve got two of them. This system lets you do just that, hooking up two GoPros capturing both video and photos simultaneously. Better yet, you can record synchronized footage, and use the included GoPro software to convert the footage to 3D. The waterproof tandem housing can be submerged up to 60 meters, and what would be the point of converting footage to 3D if you didn’t get 2 sweet pairs of 3D glasses as well? Camera not included. [Purchase: $199]

Roll Bar Mount

While suction cup mounts work great for the outside of your vehicle, these are designed specifically for the roll bar inside the car. Created for the race car drivers out there, this is a great way to not only film the road, but also give step-by-step driving instructions. The mount comes with pivoting arms that permit 3-way adjustability, giving you more angle opportunities. It fits any bar ranging from 1.4 inches all the way up to 2.5 inches. [Purchase: $14]

Mouth Mount - Grill Mount

Mouth Mount – “Grill Mount”

The Grill Mount is certainly one of the coolest looking GoPro accessories on the market, and was originally designed for surfers (although we’ve seen plenty of individuals find some great uses for it thinking outside of the box). Crafted from high quality food grade polycarbonate, this mount is held right between your teeth by biting down on the comfortable EVA. There’s a built-in Free Flow Breathing Channel to ensure you’re never short of breath, and all you have to do to close the breathing path (when duck diving) is close your lips. Preventing drop ins requires some verbal interaction with other surfers, so the Grill Mount is designed in a way that still allows you to speak clearly. We’d recommend pairing this with a Floaty Backdoor to keep it above water at all times, but it does come with an 8 pack of reusable anti fog inserts – a nice added bonus. [Purchase: $30]

Helmet Mount

Helmet Mount

Seeing that many of you may already be wearing a helmet (from dirt bike riders to snowboarders), this GoPro mount could quickly become your best friend. Simply attach it to the front of your helmet to capture forward facing footage, or you can adjust the extendable arm to point the camera right at your face. The mount attaches to your helmet using ultra strong adhesive, but can easily be removed by using a hair dryer and peeling off. There’s also a vertical quick release buckle to easily pull the camera on and off your helmet. [Purchase: $13]

Handle Mount - The Original Handle

Handle Mount – The Original Handle

There are a ton of different options out there when it comes handle mounts for capturing steady low angle footage, but we’ve found this one to be far and wide the best bang for your buck. Designed to work with all GoPro HERO cameras, the Original Handle is constructed from super tough impact resistant polymer, features an adjustable paracord wrist strap, rubber feet, and at just 4 pounds, is it extremely portable. The only drawback is that it can be a little difficult to get your hands on as it does sell out regularly. [Purchase: $30]

GoPole Scenelapse

Personal Camera Buddy 3rd Person POV Mount

Personal Camera Buddy 3rd Person POV Mount

Anti Fog Inserts

BONUS: Anti Fog Inserts

Technically this would be number 26 on the list, but we felt it would be a disservice to GoPro owners not to include this absolutely essential accessory. While it might not be as fancy as most of the other options on the list, it is a must have. These handy little inserts prevent the fogging of your lens in cold and humid environments, a problem that is all too common with action cameras. This pack includes 12 inserts, all of which will last for about 4 uses. They’re worth the the investment – you’ll thank us later. [Purchase: $11]
